February 2, 20241 yr the Dec 1973 ice storm started as snow...then changed to freezing rain and sleet where I live...my girlfriend at the time lived in Howard beach and that part of Queens had more ice than my block in Brooklyn...we had more sleet just a 10 miles west of Kennedy...many deformed pine trees and bushes along the belt parkway and some trees down...The January 7-8th, 1994 ice storm was almost as bad on my block...the video speaks for itself...its been 18 years now since the 2007 sleet storms in Feb and March...There was an ice storm on January 23rd-24th, 1965...Jan 23rd was a Saturday...It was 47 degrees early in the am hours...it started raining but quickly changed to sleet and freezing rain...It was mostly sleet the rest of the day...3" of sleet accumulated...freezing rain near the end of the event...the great winter period in January 1961 started with a mostly sleet event mid month...

December 16th 1973..OJ Simpson broke James Brown rushing record at Shea Stadium. You can see the ice storm on NFL films from that day. Starting as snow and changing to freezing rain. By Monday the next day the sidewalks in Brooklyn were ice skating rinks.I remember the trees were glistening in ice..Looked like Christmas for a few days. Unfortunately there was a warm up a few days later and the ice was gone.Turned out a mild rainy Christmas week lol sound familiar?
