if you look at pictures from the blizzard of 1888 you can see it was the biggest snowstorm ever...it had to be under measured...

I have thought this for many years.  I am glad I am not the only one.

During one hour with boxing day I measured over 4" of snow.  I'm not sure if I'll experience that again.

I will say that Boxing Day comes close. To this day I measured 26" at the low end the high end was 33". For sheer power, and I mean snow rates per hour, Boxing Day 2010 wins. Never seen it snow that hard from 7 pm to midnight.

Lyndhurst NJ has 29" of snow at 2 am and parts of the Jersey Shore, Brick and Belmar had 33-36".  My friend in Wall swears he measured 36".

I had more snow from Boxing Day and almost equal in 2016.

But from the amount of people who got over 20", 1996 is still the king, but 2016 was really close.

If 2016's cutoff was 100 miles north, it really would have rivaled 1996.

Yup but 1/26-1/27 2011 imby had 5 inches in one hour here at the height of the storm. Rest of that storm was 3 inches per hour maybe 4 at times. That thing was such a violent winter storm. Tons of CG lightning too. February 2006 did similar here with per hour rates as both Boxing Day and 1/26-1/27 2011

I really enjoyed 2016 for sure. Top 5 for me. 25 inches.

I think two things have to be considered. Snow depth and snow total.... I don't think back in '96 they measured like they do today.

You know what is actually underrated? February 2021 for Morristown and Morris County. They got 30-35".

The area I want to school, Mountain Lakes and Madison got absolutely crushed. 31 inches.

I got around 22" in Montclair, and NYC got around 18 but if that came 25 miles East, I am sure NYC would have to gotten 28-31"

years ago, snow was measured when the snow stopped...to can tell buy what the snow depth was after the storm...example...the January 1964 blizzard started with a bare ground...12.5" of snow was measured...13" was the snow depth...same for other big storms of that era...

That can work if the event was pure snow and didn't have any significant lulls.

The first storm on 2/8/1994 add temperatures dropping into the low teens with lightning and 3 to 4 in./h rates. Funny thing is it wasn’t even a storm it was a wave along a boundary. Once you went south of North Central New Jersey I believe it was all sleet and freezing rain

After a front end thump of 6-8” yes New Brunswick and south flipped over to driving sleet mixing in and out of snow at times. I living on Cook campus at the time and in Manalapan weekends. This occurred on both days leaving a thick brick of 12-15” OTG when all was done. I actually drove into Elizabeth immediately after hearing reports of 25” OTG there.

Once you got south of Howell I195 the depth decline rapidly to just a few inches of sleet and freezing rain. Those were wild times for sure.
