Looking at January 94 on Ray's site you realize how many absolute MONSTER snowstorms we missed to our north in that month, either because it was freezing rain here or whatever other reason.

Despite missing out on some big hitters LGA still finished with around 60 inches that year.

I think that's their second highest after 96. Uncle, confirm?

the January 7-8th ice storm was a great storm...below freezing throughout and days after...There was a clipper near the end of Jan that gave us 4-5" without any ice...one of four storms that were all snow...

Hurricane Irene now nearing 11 years ago, feels like yesterday. Not the most destructive storm for SE PA with wind, but certainly one of the worst in recent history in terms of rainfall and flooding. Lost power and school was closed for days

The only storm I ever received flood damage from. And the winds were not exactly lame either. Multiple tor warnings with EF1 damage not too far away.

Late 1977 and 78 had 15” - 18” + but too young to remember with detail except 77 that was suppose to change to rain according to Frank Field on the 11pm news with 4” - 6” already OTG but never did and school was closed for a week because the town only had one snow plow. I was 9 and the snow was up-to my hips with big drifts.

Just to note how incredible 2009/10 - 10/11with both years combine produced 8 MECS/HECS level events totaling 135” of snow here. This was followed up 2 years later with 2013/14-15 producing three MECS level events totaling 127” of snow. Incredible!

over the last 30 years or so NYC had a record of consecutive years with a 10" snowstorm twice...1993-96...2003-06...record for consecutive years with at least 30" of snowfall....five from 2014-18...six storms 20" or more...

The problem is the last 25 years have also produced the most under 10 inch winters as well. As many duds like that since 1998 as were in the rest of the snowfall record before that, from 1869 through 1998.

its all or nothing at all...this year snow is lacking but not the cold...over the last couple of years we started to get very dry periods even though annual precipitation is above the big drought decades of the 1930's to 1960's...

Although FEB 1983 had the most lightning I’ve ever seen in the snowstorm it did not have the loudest thunder. The loudest thunder claps I ever heard in a snowstorm. I am talking the explosive thunder when the flash of lightning in the thunder is almost at the same time.

I went looking through Ray's winter storm archive and checked out a lot of the radars of past storms.

What the hell happened to all the storms that used to produce big, solid blobs of precip?

Everything is stupid banding now.

Seriously, it's like they're all gone now

We have not had a true Miller A in years which is what is featured a lot of the time on Ray's site.

Until such time where we get a setup where the storms can dig and not get shunted out to sea or cut and tap into gulf moisture you will continue to get storms with Miller B style banding as what you must depend on to get bigger snow totals.

Hey @FrankPizz did you get shafted bad in Boxing Day?

I'm looking at some snowfall maps and western NJ got totally screwed in that storm, you go from 5 inches to 25 inches just doing the short drive west-east across Somerset County.

Thankfully I hadn't moved yet.  I was in Middlesex Co and got 25" or so.  If I lived here, which is like 11 miles as the crow flies west, I would have gotten like 5".  I often look at that on Ray's site.  That would have been a rough one to miss.

You lucked out, to miss that would have been awful

That cutoff is evil on the snowfall maps, totally different world just doing a 15 minute drive on i78

Yup. I remember Ray Matin himself flew back to his parents house in Ewing for that storm

15.3 miles as the crow flies.  Blue is where I was,  red is where I am.  That would have been heartbreaking

Boxing day was the storm on ONE DEFORMATION BAND. if you in it, you got absolutely SLAMMED with 2'+ snows. Outside of it, if you got 12" you were lucky. I live in SW suffolk county on Long Island and I got 11.8". Wind was the biggest story by far but outside of that, wasn't a big deal at all here. Definitely not even in the top 15 here for me.
