31 years ago right now, on February 8, 1994 the snow was coming down at the rate of 3 to 4 in./h temperature temperatures had dropped into the teens and there was lightning. The original forecast was for snow to become steady and heavier in the afternoon and the next morning as rain with 4 to 6 inches. Many places in New York City and where I was in Queens ended up getting a foot in about four hours and then sleet on top of that. Many drivers were stranded on highways because their windshield wipers froze to the window. There was another storm three days later which dropped another foot of snow

Just two days later

Which was incredible. There was also a light freezing rain event just after the second snowstorm creating a quarter inch of glaze over the snowpack.

It was a lot of fun walking in it as a kid and breaking through the icy shell with every foot step, I can remember it like it was yesterday.

One of my childhood faves..Totally unexpected..Forecast was for periods of rain maybe stating as snow..Started as sleet and turned to heavy snow early in the morning of the 9th..Snowed heavy all day with a temp of 33..Later in the day and evening blowing snow as winds picked up. The weather serviced blew the forecast so NYC was not prepared for the 15 inches so snow removal was slow. Mayor Lindsay was blamed and it was called the Lindsay Snowstorm. It happened 56 years ago today which also happened to be on a Sunday..NYC wouldnt have another snowstorm of 10 inches or more for 9 more years.

Feb 11 1984 had a 3 inch per hour observation at one of their local stations during the morning and that was the second time in three days that it was 3 inches in one hour which is a record. There was never a time before us since we were two separate storms drop 3 inches in one hour.

Feb 12 1975. Where I used to live in Queens where I grew up in Richmond Hill it started snowing in the morning if I remember correctly and I was out playing in the snow and the snow became heavy fact it was the heaviest snow I seen in my entire life up until that point. All of a sudden there was a bright flash of lightning and an explosive crack of thunder and I remember I ran into the house that absolutely scared the crap out of me. That was the first time in my life that I ever saw lightning and hurt thunder in a snowstorm. It only snowed for about six hours but we ended up getting over 8 inches of snow.

The winter of 1974-75 was one of the worst winters of my lifetime despite that snowstorm. With the exception of that storm and a smaller one a few days earlier and another one in March, that was it. It was a very mild winter too, the warmest winter of the 1970s. I believe New York City Central Park only had seven days with a high of 32 or below.

I remember it started as sleet for a half hour where I lived in Brooklyn...Bob Harris forecast for the winter was four major storms...two in January and two in February...We had two misses in January and one of two missed in February...He kept saying beware the ides of March...We had a heavy snow warning the morning of March 14th...it snowed for a few hours before it changed to sleet and rain...I was up in the Poconos, and it changed to sleet there...2" accumulated up there...less than an inch in the city...

The blizzard of Feb 11-12 2006. I got 5 inches in 1 hour at one point in that storm with lightning. New York City Central Park at 26 inches . 25.5 inches where I used to live in Queens. There was a very sharp drop off from accumulation just a couple of miles south east of me once you got out of that deformation band. Southeastern Queens only had a foot as well as Nassau County. There was a secondary band that gave Suffolk County nearly 20 inches. I believe Bridgeport only had a foot.

Very sharp cutoff-I'm about 7-8 miles west of the Bridgeport reporting station-had about 16-17 inches here-even more just to my west.

I think I had about 20" with that one.

And it all vanished as fast as it came down because it was near 60 degrees for three days in a row like a day later

I just looked it up and I find it interesting that the depth only reaches 17 inches? How can it be a whopping 10 inches lower than the total?

LGA reported 28.2 inches for Jan 2016 and reported 27 inches snow depth!!!

Compaction/sublimation?     Winter was a blowtorch despite the usual "the cold pattern is coming" for 2 months...we were lucky to get that storm....but the warm pattern resumed right after and it was all gone within 5-6 days.

I remember at times during that storm it was literally melting on the ground as it was falling when it lightened up.

Probably my least favorite big snowstorm.

Ground was warm too after the blowtorch of January...I remember that here too the first couple hours it had a hard time accumulating on pavement here.

11 years ago, NYC got 9.5" of snow in the morning before changing to rain for 10 or so hours...Then changed back to snow overnight and another 3" fell...there was about 6" of new snow on the ground after it ended...Very depressing storm...Could have been huge without a change over...my back yard after the storm...

You must have been shafted a bit more in Staten Island?

I liked that storm, it dumped a ton of snow very quickly, it was near zero visibility.

Then it did finally taint with sleet and it did go above freezing for awhile during the afternoon but none of it really melted. Then that 3 to 4 inch wraparound overnight was an unexpected bonus.

I know VIRGAMAN got like near 20 inches because he was hammered by the wraparound.

Essentially winter ended after that. If we would have kept going at that pace we could have challenged or even broken 1995-96 but after that everything was suppressed and it was dry. We had some snow around midnight on April 16. There was a couple of inches in Coney Island as I was finishing up my Train trip.
