Looking back, 1993-94 had really no blocking until the end of the winter.

Maybe that's why it started a bit late and the first snow event was a clipper.

We had a lot of overunning that year and finally got a big coastal in March when we got a little blocking.

You can have a very good winter without a ton of blocking, but blocking is more important in December.

True, -PNA but the EPO was N I believe. The overrunning events were every few days the 3-6" and 4-8" events. It's workable.

It was a neutral ENSO, so it is a useable analog.

ICON drops the hammer end of next week

Icon also has a closed mid level trough with a northern stream shortwave dropping in. Definitely miller b potential.

Not perfect - but the -PNA/-NAO/-WPO block has given us a pattern through at least mid-Dec that has resembled a blend of December 2008/2010:

yes, next weekend is another example of a trend colder.

Now models are showing near zero for lows and highs not making it to 20.

It was in the 30s a couple days ago.

Snowstorm next Friday for the N & W crew on the GFS. NYC is very close. PV lobe in SE Canada helps to press on the flow & direct the energy more eastward.

The GFS also likes that here Wed nite to early Thursday, looking much more robust!

@Snowlover76 will kill me if this happens LOL

Then the entire PV drops into Minnesota.

Actually that PV may get fairly close to me, how cold will we get next weekend?!

Snow for N&W this run, followed by the PV, like on the ICON.

The PV is in Des Moines Saturday morning! If that happens in January, Watch out!
