I'd like to know if there has ever been a Blizzard Warning on Hatteras, or a verified blizzard out there?

Here’s what historical records show about blizzard-style or major snow events on the Outer Banks of North Carolina (including Cape Hatteras) in March 1980 and December 1989 — noting that formal blizzard warnings weren’t always issued by the National Weather Service (especially for coastal areas back then), but both storms produced blizzard-like conditions:

🌨 March 1–3, 1980 (Major Snowstorm / Near-Blizzard)

  • A powerful late-winter coastal snowstorm (often called the “Snowstorm of the Century” for eastern NC) brought heavy snow and high winds to the region.

  • Eastern North Carolina saw widespread snowfall of 12–18+ inches, with some locations reporting up to 25+ inches.

  • At Cape Hatteras, wind gusts reached around 62 mph, and snow drifts reportedly built up to ~8 feet.

  • These conditions — heavy snow + high winds + low visibility — closely resembled what is commonly called a blizzard, even if the formal blizzard warning product history may not be readily available from that period.

🎄 December 22–24, 1989 (Christmas Snowstorm)

  • A rare coastal winter storm just before Christmas dumped around a foot or more of snow on parts of the Outer Banks and eastern NC.

  • Cape Hatteras and OBX

We need heavy rain. This salt is killing our health.

You should stop eating it

It’s in the air. It’s everywhere. It’s very bad and we desperately need heavy rain.

I thought we had a chance to get to lower single digits. 10 again.

I am shocked I thought for sure it would be well below zero here with all the snow.

I’d call this winter a complete failure if this verified lol thankfully it won’t

It's not the city this time that's the problem.

I only dropped to 9 degrees and the super cold spots in Nassau County only dropped to near zero.

They should have been well below zero like you and I should have been closer to zero instead.

I'm just guessing either clouds or wind or something messed up the temperature drop around here.

Drought is back.
