Yea for sure, eventually it’s gonna be wrong no way can it be this perfect lol.

I think a model has to be around for a year before we know what it can and cannot do- maybe even longer- because next winter's pattern may be very different than this one.

While records for

Long Island

specifically are often grouped with the broader New York City metropolitan area, the historical and current data regarding consecutive sub-freezing days are as follows:

  • Longest Recorded Stretch: The all-time record for the region (measured at Central Park) is 16 consecutive days with high temperatures at or below freezing, set in February 1961.

  • Current Deep Freeze (2026): As of January 31, 2026, the area is currently in the midst of a major cold snap. Today marks the 8th consecutive day with temperatures failing to rise above 32°F.

  • Forecasted Duration: Current AccuWeather forecasts suggest this streak could reach 12 to 14 days, which would be the longest since a 14-day stretch in January 2018.

  • Recent History: Before the current 2026 event, the most significant recent cold streak occurred from December 26, 2017, to January 8, 2018, lasting 14 days.

  • Extreme Records: While not a "consecutive day" record, the absolute lowest temperature ever recorded on Long Island was -14°F at Gabreski Airport in Westhampton Beach in 1967 and 2009.

The most difficult part is going to be mid-week. Guidance is 32-34 degrees. After that, the guidance cools back to the low 20s.

IF you get through this week, the streak will reach over 20 days.

How is it possible, that in 2026, someone is still heating their house with oil?
It's mind boggling.

I have oil here in NW NJ, natural gas lines don’t come out to rural areas, especially with rocky ground. Costs way too much to run they lines, it’s oil or propane for me.

I wouldn't move anywhere where there was oil.

It's literally triple the price of gas.

And you don't have to monitor a gauge and call to get your gas filled.

Hopefully we get a couple of clippers over the next week, models do like Valentine’s Day weekend they kept hinting at something around that timeframe

Ya I saw it’s borderline for NYC area, two weeks to go as long as a storm keeps showing

lol.. Ok models can’t get anything right a week out let alone 2 weeks.

I am in the camp that this epic cold pattern ends with a big storm sometime in the Feb 15-25 period. Still well BN temps for foreseeable future.

We should all take a couple inches. Snowing hard out here. I just went for a jebwalk and the funny thing is, it's 15 degrees with moderate snow on a strong south wind.

Low of 3.7 this morning. Hasn't gone below zero this week where I was over 5 degrees warmer than forecasted

They never go cold either. To see them go that cold is a shocker!
