I've been watching the MJO and its been interesting to see it in phase 8...If its like this next winter, we could buck the trend of warm snowless winter with a strong el nino...

I wish I could be that optimistic, but strong nino's are always warm,. The only good news is there could be an historic blizzard like 83 and 16..sometimes there is nothing like 72-73 and 97-98.

Plenty of one storm winters during El Niño… 1957-58 was reclassified as strong.. we will need blocking too…

Missing snow in March this year was a bit annoying. One more storm in the 4-8" variety would have been great, even if it melted in a day or two.

I agree with that. I'll take Dec snow over March any year.

Oh yeah, me too. Having snow on the ground and going to see the Christmas light displays isn’t common here and it was so good to see it last winter.

Need blocking in March here-just didn't have it this year.

We've had a string of bad marches recently. 5 of the last 7 here have been zero, the other 2 were 3". In the 90s we had a really bad string of Decembers. 91/92 to 99/00, only 95/96 was good (14") and 93/94 (4"), the rest were 0's or 1"

2 biggest snowstorms that I saw in December in the 1970s and 1980s was a 3 inch storm about a week before Christmas in December 1979 and then there was four or 5 inches the second week of December 1982.

The snowstorm of December 28-29 1990 I believe had 7 inches of snow and that was the biggest December snowstorm at that point since December 1960!

I never used to think about December snowstorms when I was younger our snowstorms always came in January in February. It wasn’t until December 2002 December 2003 where everything changed and now people expect that every single year and it just doesn’t happen like that.

Dec 84 was another warm December with a 5" snowfall just after Christmas...from 1957 to 1966 NYC had Dec 4" or better snowstorms in 1957, 1959, 1960, 1961, 1963, 1966...1958 and 1962 just missed...not to mention snow on the ground Christmas morning in 1959, 60, 61, 62, 63 and 66...

I'm gona wait to see how this shakes out.

I don't like super ninos - but we have to let this whole thing develop

Probably lots of blocking - but PAC gona be fast underneath.

Good for the South ?

super ninos usually mean a mild December...looking at old data from the JMA and mei from the 1870's have a few more strong el nino's...1982-83 had some good blocking at times leading to cold and some snows...big blizzard in Feb...1957-58 had snow and cold with good blocking...1965-66 had a great period of snow and cold with strong blocking...1986-87 similar to 65-66...2015-16 had a great storm with strong blocking...so we need blocking and timing or we end up like 1991-92 or 1972-73...

old data strong el ninos...

1877-78...dud

1888-89...dud but colder...

1896-97...very good winter...

1899-00...dud...

1902-03...good winter...

1905-06...not very good...

1914-15...good winter...

1918-19...dud...

1925-26...good winter...

1930-31...dud...

1940-41...very good...

1941-42...dud...
