Springtime - Warmth, backdoors and storms

By the way, the other night, Joe Cioffi on the Joe and Joe Weather podcast said that there is a good chance that this heat that we had will be the hottest we see for the rest of the spring and summer.

It happened that way in 1997 under similar atmospheric conditions.

Daily climo reports for NYC & EWR were both 90 before 5pm as well. NYC has to get their 90 degree days in before the leaves are out haha.

I might have confused that with 1996? There was one summer in the late 1990s that had their hottest day on May 20.

years when the hottest temp of the year came before June in NYC since 1950......

2009...92...el nino...tied in July...very cool summer...

2000...93...la nina very cool summer...

1996...96...la nina...cool summer...

1992...93...second year el nino...cool summer...tied in July...

1987...97...second year el nino...pretty hot summer...

1976...96...el nino...cool summer...

1969...97...second year el nino...normal summer...

1962...99...weak negative...cool August...

Oh actually, it was 1996. It got up to I believe 96 or 97 in May n NYC I forgot what day it was similar to what we had and then the rest of the summer I believe it didn’t hit 90° in June or July. I believe it did hit 90 in August, but that was just for one day.

I just don’t want I want a winter like 1996-97 though.

97 on May 20, no 90s in July, and one 90 degree day in August. That winter was not as bad as you think, if you really look at each individual event.

There were a lot of little events, a couple missed most of the region just to the south, and a couple just didn't amplify.

Then there was the April 1 event, which would have been an areawide blizzard if it happened a couple weeks earlier.

That was not a "good" winter by any means, but at least it had a lot of potential to be more. Compare it to a winter like 2001-02, which didn't even have potentials at all, and I'd gladly take 1996-97 and see if we can't do better.

1996-97 was a victim of early and late winter storms...early Dec and April 1st...if those events were in January we could have seen a big snow...but you can say that about some other dud winters...

Two and a half inches of rain here and not done yet!

Wet and cool memorial day weekend incoming. Good thing im working.

When I was a train operator, I worked a lot on the F train out of 179th St. and Hillside Avenue. I have seen many thunderstorms there torrential ones, but there was never any water that came inside the station because that area of Hillside Avenue is higher than other parts like 169th St. and Parsons Boulevard and Sutton Boulevard, those were the stations that would always flood because they are in the lower part of Hillside Avenue. but the other night there was so much flooding that the water came and poured down the stairs at 179th and they came down like a waterfall, and it flooded the tracks.

A lot of queens into Western Nassau had rainfall rates of 4 to 6 1/2 inches per hour with some areas getting 3 1/2 inches of rain in less than a half hourThat is insane for May 20. Union Turnpike was severely flooded Marcus Avenue by Hillside Avenue that had to be water rescues in new Hyde Park. The Long Island Expressway was completely flooded again. Springfield Blvd in southeast Queens, which had a massive sewer reconstruction project got flooded again, even worse than it ever did.

Happy Memorial Day Weekend! Unfortunately weather wise it will be wet and almost record cold especially tomorrow afternoon. Most models now keep temperatures below 50 degrees tomorrow afternoon - this would break the Chester County record for low maximum temperatures for the date set back in 1982. There is a chance it could be the coldest late season high temperature on record. With gusty winds it will feel a lot more like early March than Memorial Day Weekend. Rain-wise models show between an inch to as much as 3.5" of much needed rain!

My family over 50 years in the same area, no flooding in the area until Ida in 2021. Since then it has happend like 4 times in the same area. Just absurd.

Similar for my family and friends that live in Piscataway and have since the late 60s. Floyd flooded in area's that never flooded before. But since then, there have been at least 4 major floods and several small ones. Some is definitely a few insane storms, but also the building in that town since the mid-90s has been gross. WlThey went from like 45k people to 60k and also tons of warehouses and a data center or 2 have been built. Also a bunch of stores, strip malls, etc. There is like no forest areas left. In the 50 years, it went from farms to 95% paved over land. That totally adds to the flooding. All that building is why I left. Town traffic was brutal. Unfortunately that building and stripping of land is leaking into my current town now. No escaping or stopping it it seems

I'd rather live in a more rural area too.

But at least in eastern Queens/western Nassau in terms of land usage it hasn't changed at all since the 1960s.

At least that is good. It is a bit depressing every time I go back to Piscataway. Area's where my friends and I played are no longer there. Town barely resembles what I grew up in.

I used to go to Piscataway a lot in the 1990s and 2000s and I was always nice. It always had that suburban almost rural feel but from what I heard from you and other people too it’s like it’s turning into a version of a city now.

I had to go into Garden City in Nassau County earlier in the week and Garden City may as well have been Manhattan. Franklin Avenue is like sitting on the Long Island Expressway at rush-hour.
