Summer Thread - Drought, Heat...Tropics?

Today is going to be the last of the low dewpoint days for the foreseeable future. Starting tomorrow evening we are going to be more humid through at least July 10, dews will be mostly in the middle to up 60s.

I can’t complain at all. We’re going into July so that’s to be expected and a dewpoint is 68 is still better than a dewpoint of 80.

June 24 1975 Eastern Airlines flight 66 crashes as a result of a microburst during a thunderstorm as they were landing and they crashed right onto Rockaway Boulevard by JFK airport in Queens, New York At the time it was the worst airline crash in the United States.

My father, my brother, and myself used to watch the planes land, right where the crash was, my father used to pull right off rockaway Boulevard park in the dirt and we would stand and watch them come right over overhead on their way to the runway. I believe we were there either the night before or a couple of nights before.

That’s where the plane crashed. Back in the 1970s those runway approach lights were actually very big stanctions and each of them weighed several tons. As the plane got pushed toward the ground, it could have possibly made it to the runway, but it hit several of the stanctions which slow its forward speed and that attributed to the crash. That is one of the reasons why they are the way they are now and if a plane happens to hit them, they go right down.

I saw the storm develop from a rising cumulus cloud over Bay Ridge...I felt a few drops and watched the cloud move east towards JFK and by the time it got there it exploded...so did the plane unfortunately...

Central Park got .18, KLGA got .12 and JFK got .42 and at the time of the crash, the northwest part of JFK, which is over by Howard Beach was dry so those storms were very isolated.

This was one of those times that Queens got hit hard in between the airports, and that happens sometimes and you don’t get a true representation of how much rain fell. Am I opinion between the stream of water and the street being out toward the middle, which only happened a couple of other times when I was living there in the fact that there was a river coming out of the dead end across the street from me, which was one of the biggest I’ve ever seen. I wouldn’t be surprised if we got a half inch in three or four minutes cause that rain was incredible and the storm developed so quickly within minutes.

Haha. They actually had 2 over 7.0 this evening

Another great day on the way today with highs just about normal for late June. Shower chances start to increase after midnight tonight. With showers becoming likely by later Friday night and into Saturday morning. Models generally paint around 0.50" of rain across the area. We start a big warmup next week with many spots except the higher ridge locations touching 90 by Tuesday with more widespread 90's possible by Wednesday.

A really interesting statistic for the entire USA which exactly mirrors the data I share here from the philly burbs of Chester County. This below analysis measures not the typical metric of 90+ days but unusual hot periods of at least 4 days on average across the entire country where the average temperature reaches a level based on historical records that would be expected to only occur once every 10 years. Look how much hotter the entire nation was back in 1930's and 1940's compared to today! No matter how much we hear about how hot it is today we have still not reached that peak heating from the 1930 through 1942 period which matches the hottest period here in Chester County PA.

models showing some rain July 4th… brutal if true

Cant get a good feel on tomorrow. Seems like 12z runs so far keep most precip away from area after the morning. Euro will be interesting. My sister is having my niece's graduation party tomorrow at 2pm and keeps hounding me for updates. Telling her to prep for mostly indoors

What was once a nice little rain event for tomorrow is dissipating on the models.

Get used to it, I believe that is going to be the theme this entire summer. It’s been really bad here. I had a thunderstorm with about 45 seconds of very heavy rain back in May. The last time I got a thunderstorm with heavy rain enough to cause flooding and those big streams with frequent lighting and thunder was New Year’s Eve 2024. In early July 2025 there were thunderstorms of straw and then we got some lightning and we got some intermittent heavy downpours that dropped maybe a half inch but ever since then it’s been nothing special.

Not for all. I had .79" of heavy rain last night. ~6 miles NNW of me saw 2". Its gonna be more localized. So far this week I have 1.79 of much needed rain. NW again has about 4".
